On Friday evening at 4:56 p.m., the Pingree Grove & Countryside Fire Protection District responded to a single-vehicle accident at 14N187 United States Highway 20 involving a box truck that had struck a power pole, resulting in a brush fire.
Upon the arrival of Engine 1213, crews located a heavily damaged vehicle in a ditch with the driver ambulatory on scene. Chief 1201 arrived shortly after and immediately requested ComEd to the scene to shut down power to the affected lines, enabling crews to safely extinguish the fire. Once the power was confirmed to be off, crews began extinguishing the brush fire safely. The driver declined medical treatment and signed a release at the scene. Due to the damaged utility infrastructure, Route 20 was closed for several hours while ComEd conducted repairs and cleared the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
